Gulf of Maine Science Communication Fellowship Summer 2023

With funding from the NSF, we hosted a science communication fellowship program for undergraduate students in collaboration with CMC, Bowdoin College, Brown University, and Hamilton College. Participants attended a five-day workshop at the Bowdoin College Shiller Coastal Studies Center, where students learned about how the opinions of local stakeholders can intersect with science and inform environmental policy. Students presented original research and received mentorship in science communication skills from our Gulf of Maine research collaborators, including faculty from CMC, Bowdoin College, Hamilton College, Iowa State University, the University of Bristol, and Western Washington University. We visited and interviewed local stakeholders such as the Basin Oyster Project, Mook Sea Farms, and Wharfside Associates to further explore connections between our paleoceanographic research and industry. After hearing the opinions and needs of stakeholders, students created deliverables in the form of op-eds, policy memos, and infographics.

EnviroLab
The Henry Luce Foundation through the Luce Initiative on Asian Studies and the Environment is supporting our initiative EnviroLab Asia. Through this program, we collaborate with colleagues nationally and in Asia to explore global environmental challenges in an experiential setting linking classroom learning to field practice. During the Envirolab Clinic trip, faculty and students engage in the co-production of knowledge, systems thinking, quantitative analysis, communication, and engagement with communities. In our first year, we worked with faculty at Burapha University Chanthaburi Campus and Yale-NUS to learn about nutrient cycling, and with colleague Ruth Pongstaphone to think about using theater and performance arts as a medium to convey information. In 2023, we collaborated with our colleagues in Maine to explore the intersection of science and policy through understanding the role of the ocean in providing societal resilience.
